Season Overview
The 2017–18 season represented a period of transition for Leicester City as the club continued to establish itself following the extraordinary Premier League title triumph of 2015–16. Craig Shakespeare began the campaign as manager after successfully guiding Leicester away from relegation trouble the previous season, but a difficult opening run led to his dismissal in October. Former Southampton manager Claude Puel was appointed as his replacement and introduced a more possession-oriented approach while attempting to refresh an aging title-winning core.
Leicester recovered from their difficult start and spent much of the season comfortably positioned in the Premier League’s top half. The Foxes eventually finished ninth with 47 points, recording 12 victories and scoring 56 league goals. Jamie Vardy remained the focal point of the attack, while Riyad Mahrez continued to provide creativity from wide areas. The emergence of Harry Maguire following his arrival from Hull City also gave Leicester an important new presence in defense.
In domestic competition, Leicester reached the quarter-finals of both major cups. Their League Cup campaign ended against Manchester City following a penalty shootout, while Chelsea eliminated them from the FA Cup after extra time at the King Power Stadium. Although the club did not seriously challenge for European qualification, the campaign demonstrated that Leicester could remain competitive in the Premier League after the remarkable highs of the title-winning season and subsequent Champions League run.
The 2017–18 Leicester City third shirt featured a striking black design with gold detailing, creating one of the club’s most distinctive looks of the era. Worn during a transitional period that still featured many members of the legendary 2015–16 squad, it connects Leicester’s championship generation with the club’s next phase. Its understated design has made it an appealing vintage football shirt and retro soccer jersey for collectors, particularly when paired with the name of one of the greatest players in Leicester City history.
Player’s Impact – Jamie Vardy
Jamie Vardy remained Leicester City’s undisputed attacking leader throughout the 2017–18 campaign. Operating primarily as the central striker, he continued to thrive through explosive runs behind defensive lines, aggressive pressing, and instinctive finishing. Even as Claude Puel attempted to introduce a more patient possession game, Vardy’s ability to attack space remained Leicester’s most dangerous offensive weapon.
Vardy scored 20 Premier League goals in 37 appearances, reaching the 20-goal mark for the second time in three seasons. He finished fourth in the Premier League scoring charts behind Mohamed Salah, Harry Kane, and Sergio Agüero, reinforcing that his extraordinary title-winning campaign two years earlier had not been an isolated achievement. Across all competitions, Vardy finished the season with 23 goals.
Several of those goals came against elite opposition. Vardy scored against Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and both Manchester clubs during the campaign. His ability to threaten the Premier League’s strongest defenses was particularly valuable to Leicester, whose counter-attacking approach often depended on releasing him quickly into the space behind opponents. Few forwards in England were as effective when isolated against a retreating defensive line.
By the end of the campaign, Vardy had firmly established himself as far more than the unlikely hero of Leicester’s championship season. At 31 years old, he remained one of England’s most productive strikers and continued to demonstrate the pace, intensity, movement, and ruthless finishing that had defined his rise. The 2017–18 Leicester City third vintage football shirt captures Vardy during one of his strongest individual campaigns and makes for a distinctive retro soccer jersey connected to the club’s modern golden era.
