2018 Manchester City Home – De Bruyne #17 XL

Season Overview

The 2018-19 campaign was one of the most dominant in English football history. Pep Guardiola’s side went into the season as champions and kept the Premier League title in a chase with Liverpool that went to the final day. City won their last 14 league games, clinched the title with a 4–1 win at Brighton, and finished on 98 points, one ahead of Liverpool’s 97.

The league was only part of it. City beat Chelsea 2–0 in the Community Shield. They won the League Cup on penalties after a 0–0 draw with Chelsea at Wembley. They also beat Watford 6–0 in the FA Cup final. That made them the first English men’s team to win all three major domestic trophies in a season, and the first to hold all four English trophies at once. Along the way came a 9–0 win over Burton Albion in the League Cup semi-final. The one disappointment was a Champions League quarter-final exit to Tottenham.

Player’s Impact – Kevin De Bruyne

This was a season of two halves for De Bruyne. He came off a 2017-18 in which he had 8 league goals and 16 assists, and went into the new campaign after a standout World Cup with Belgium. Then a lateral collateral ligament injury to his right knee in training ruled him out for around three months. A second knee problem followed in November, and he ended up playing only 19 Premier League games.

He still made a mark. He finished with 6 goals in 32 appearances, two each in the league, League Cup and FA Cup. His best moment came in the FA Cup final, when he came off the bench against Watford and scored and set up a goal in a 35-minute cameo. For a collector, this shirt is from the year City won everything at home, and it carries the name of the creator who became the club’s defining playmaker.
