2016 Real Madrid Home – Ronaldo #7 Large

Season Overview

The 2016-17 campaign was one of the great seasons in Real Madrid’s history. Zinedine Zidane’s side finished first in La Liga with 93 points. They clinched the 33rd league title on 21 May 2017 with a 2–0 win at Málaga, the club’s first league crown since 2012. They also won the Champions League for a second year running, beating Juventus 4–1 in Cardiff on 3 June 2017. That made Madrid the first club to successfully defend the title since the competition’s 1992 rebrand, and it completed the club’s first league and Champions League double since 1957-58.

The season also brought the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. The one blemish was a Copa del Rey quarter-final exit to Celta Vigo. This white Adidas home shirt, with the Fly Emirates sponsor on the chest, is the one worn through that run.

Player’s Impact – Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo wore the number 7 and was the engine of the double. He scored 42 goals in all competitions, including 25 in La Liga. He also finished as the Champions League’s top scorer with 12 goals. He saved his best for the knockout rounds, with a hat-trick in the 3–0 first-leg semi-final win over Atlético Madrid. He then scored twice in the final against Juventus.

The individual honours followed. He was named Best FIFA Men’s Player for 2016-17 and won his fifth Ballon d’Or in 2017, level with Lionel Messi. For collectors, a Ronaldo #7 shirt from this season carries the name and number from the peak of the Zidane era.
