The 2009–10 season was a frustrating one for Liverpool, coming just a year after they finished second in the Premier League. Under Rafa Benítez, expectations were high, but the campaign was plagued by inconsistency, injuries to key players, and off-field ownership turmoil. Fernando Torres remained a lethal striker when fit, scoring regularly, but he, along with Steven Gerrard, spent significant spells sidelined. Liverpool finished 7th in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League qualification, were eliminated in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and dropped into the Europa League, where they reached the semi-finals before losing to Atlético Madrid.
