Season Overview
The 2007–08 international season was an important rebuilding period for the Costa Rica national football team following a disappointing 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign. With a new generation beginning to emerge, Costa Rica shifted its focus toward qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup while aiming to re-establish itself as one of CONCACAF’s leading nations.
Managed by Hernán Medford, Costa Rica spent much of 2007 competing in international friendlies and preparing for the upcoming World Cup qualification cycle. The squad blended experienced veterans with younger players who would later become key figures during the country’s resurgence in the following decade.
Although results were inconsistent, Costa Rica remained technically gifted and attack-minded, emphasizing possession and quick combination play. The year served as a bridge between the golden generation of the early 2000s and the squad that would eventually reach the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The 2007 Costa Rica home kit, produced by Lotto, featured the nation’s traditional red base with blue and white accents, reflecting the colors of the Costa Rican flag. Bold and clean in design, it remains a distinctive vintage football shirt from the country’s late-2000s international era.
Team Identity and Key Contributors
No specific player was requested for this jersey, making it a tribute to the collective identity of Costa Rica during a transitional period.
The team continued to rely on experienced leaders such as Walter Centeno, whose passing and vision controlled the midfield, and Gilberto Martínez, one of the country’s most accomplished defenders. Up front, Rolando Fonseca remained a dependable goal scorer and one of Costa Rica’s greatest strikers, while a young Bryan Ruiz was beginning to establish himself as one of the nation’s brightest emerging talents.
Costa Rica’s style centered on technical quality rather than physicality. The midfield prioritized intelligent passing and movement, while the attack looked to create opportunities through quick combinations and fluid positioning. Although the team was still searching for consistency, the foundations of a new generation were beginning to take shape.
