More About this
Tournament Overview
The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was one of the most memorable tournaments in the history of the Argentina national football team. Managed by Diego Maradona, Argentina entered the tournament carrying enormous expectations with a squad filled with world-class attacking talent.
Argentina dominated Group B, defeating Nigeria (1–0), South Korea (4–1), and Greece (2–0) to finish with a perfect record. In the Round of 16, they comfortably defeated Mexico 3–1, setting up a blockbuster quarter-final against Germany.
The tournament ended painfully with a 4–0 defeat to Germany, exposing Argentina’s defensive vulnerabilities despite their attacking quality. While the elimination was disappointing, the team produced exciting football throughout much of the competition and showcased one of the strongest attacking squads in the tournament.
The 2010 Argentina home kit, produced by adidas, featured the nation’s iconic sky blue and white vertical stripes with black adidas accents. Worn during the country’s first World Cup under Maradona as manager, it has become one of the most recognizable vintage football shirts of the modern era.
Player’s Impact – Carlos Tévez
The 2010 World Cup highlighted the relentless commitment and passion of Carlos Tevez. While Lionel Messi orchestrated much of Argentina’s attacking play, Tévez provided the intensity, physicality, and finishing that made him one of the team’s most dangerous forwards.
Operating as a second striker, Tévez combined explosive acceleration with tireless pressing and an incredible work ethic. He scored 2 goals during the tournament, including a memorable brace against Mexico in the Round of 16. His stunning long-range strike in that match remains one of the standout goals of the 2010 World Cup.
Tévez’s fearless style perfectly reflected the identity of Maradona’s Argentina. He constantly harassed defenders, fought for every loose ball, and brought infectious energy to the front line. His chemistry with Gonzalo Higuaín and Lionel Messi gave Argentina one of the most talented attacking trios in the competition.
Although Argentina’s tournament ended in disappointment against Germany, Tévez was one of the team’s standout performers and further strengthened his reputation as one of the country’s fiercest competitors.
