Snapshot: Inter Miami’s 2023 was a tale of two halves. After a poor MLS start (bottom of the East; Phil Neville dismissed in June), Gerardo “Tata” Martino arrived—and so did Sergio Busquets (July), swiftly followed by Jordi Alba and the already-announced Lionel Messi. With Busquets dictating tempo, Miami transformed in cups: they won the 2023 Leagues Cup (first trophy in club history) and reached the U.S. Open Cup final. MLS form improved but the early hole was too deep; they finished 14th in the East and missed the playoffs.

Busquets’ impact: From debut, Busquets became the side’s metronome and organiser. His press-resistant receiving, first-touch breaks, and vertical passing lanes to Messi/Alba/Robert Taylor turned Miami’s build-up into a flowing 3-2-5 in possession. He routinely dropped between centre-backs (Kryvtsov/Miller) to start attacks, compressed defensive distances without the ball, and mentored teenagers Benjamín Cremaschi, David Ruiz, and Tomás Avilés. The most visible dividend: the Leagues Cup run—Busquets’ control under pressure and quick diagonals repeatedly sprung transition chances, culminating in the club’s inaugural silverware. Even when injuries hit late (Messi/Alba), Busquets’ floor-raising influence kept Miami competitive (Open Cup final).
