More About this
Campaign Overview
The 2011 international campaign found Spain at the absolute height of its golden era. Managed by Vicente del Bosque, La Roja entered the year as reigning European and world champions, combining relentless possession with one of the deepest and most technically gifted squads in international football.
Spain completed its UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a perfect record, winning all eight matches in Group I against the Czech Republic, Scotland, Lithuania, and Liechtenstein. Their control of possession, patient buildup, and ability to suffocate opponents without the ball made them the clear favorites heading into the following summer’s tournament.
The 2011 Spain home kit, produced by adidas, featured the nation’s traditional red base with navy and gold detailing. The gold accents reflected Spain’s status as world champions, while the star above the federation crest commemorated their 2010 World Cup triumph. Elegant and historically significant, it remains a standout vintage football shirt from Spain’s most dominant era.
Player’s Impact – David Villa
The 2011 season was historically important for David Villa, who established himself as Spain’s greatest international goal scorer at the time.
On March 25, 2011, Villa scored twice in Spain’s 2–1 victory over the Czech Republic, surpassing Raúl to become the national team’s all-time leading scorer. He later scored twice against Liechtenstein to help secure qualification and registered his 50th international goal against Scotland in Spain’s final qualifier. Villa finished as the leading scorer in Spain’s qualifying group with seven goals.
Operating as either a central striker or left-sided forward, Villa was perfectly suited to Spain’s possession system. His intelligent diagonal runs stretched defenses, while his movement created space for midfielders such as Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, and David Silva. He remained clinical even when Spain’s patient approach produced relatively few clear opportunities.
The year ended painfully when Villa fractured his tibia while playing for Barcelona in December 2011. The injury eventually ruled him out of Euro 2012, preventing Spain’s record scorer from participating in another title-winning campaign.
