Tournament Overview

This is the Nike home shirt the Dutch wore as co-hosts of UEFA Euro 2000, in what many consider one of the best tournaments ever played. Frank Rijkaard's side didn't need to qualify, and they won all three of their group matches, against the Czech Republic, Denmark and France. The opener was tight: captain Frank de Boer scored an 89th-minute penalty against the Czech Republic. After that came a 3-0 win over Denmark and a win over a second-string France to take the group.

In the quarter-final the Dutch hit top gear. They beat FR Yugoslavia 6-1 in Rotterdam, with Kluivert scoring three and Overmars two. The semi-final against Italy was heartbreak. It finished 0-0 after extra time, and Italy won the shootout 3-1. Frank de Boer had a penalty saved and Kluivert hit the post during normal time, and the Dutch missed three of their four shootout penalties. They finished joint third and Kluivert was joint top scorer with five goals.

Player's Impact – Clarence Seedorf

Seedorf wore number 6 for the Dutch at Euro 2000 and joined a deep midfield that included Davids, Cocu and Zenden. After the tight opener, Rijkaard dropped him. His big moment came in the semi-final, when he replaced Bergkamp in the 86th minute. In extra time, Holland's best chances fell to Seedorf and Kluivert, and both fired across goal and out of play.

His story adds to the shirt's appeal. Four years earlier he missed the costly penalty against France in the 1996 shootout, so Euro 2000 was a chance at redemption on home soil. He went on to a decorated career in Italy, and he is still one of the most popular names a collector can find on an Oranje shirt from this era.
