2020 Barcelona Home – Lionel Messi #10 Small

The 2019–20 season for FC Barcelona was turbulent both on and off the pitch. Managed initially by Ernesto Valverde, the team struggled with inconsistency despite Lionel Messi’s brilliance. Valverde was sacked in January 2020 and replaced by Quique Setién, but results did not markedly improve. Barcelona finished 2nd in La Liga, five points behind Real Madrid, ending a two-year league title streak. In the Champions League, the campaign ended disastrously with an 8–2 quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich, one of the heaviest losses in the club’s history. Copa del Rey hopes also ended early in the quarter-finals. Off-field, tensions between the board and senior players — especially Messi — became increasingly public, leading to the infamous burofax saga later that summer.
