Tournament Overview

The England home shirt introduced in 2005 became the national team's primary kit for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, where Sven-Göran Eriksson's side arrived carrying enormous expectations. England possessed one of the most celebrated squads of its generation, featuring Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, and Michael Owen. After reaching the quarter-finals at both the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004, the objective was to finally turn that individual talent into a serious challenge for a major international trophy.

England finished top of Group B with seven points. They opened with a 1–0 victory over Paraguay before defeating Trinidad and Tobago 2–0 through late goals from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard. A 2–2 draw against Sweden completed the group stage, although the match brought a major setback when Michael Owen suffered a serious knee injury in the opening minutes. England had progressed unbeaten, but their performances had often lacked the fluency expected from such a talented squad.

In the Round of 16, England defeated Ecuador 1–0 through a trademark David Beckham free kick, setting up a quarter-final against Portugal. The match remained scoreless through 120 minutes, with England forced to play much of the second half and extra time with ten men following Rooney's dismissal. However, his preparation for the tournament was dominated by a fractured metatarsal suffered against Chelsea in April, creating uncertainty over whether he would be able to participate at all.

Rooney missed England's opening match against Paraguay and returned as a substitute against Trinidad and Tobago before starting against Sweden. Although he recovered sufficiently to play, he never appeared completely match sharp. Michael Owen's tournament-ending injury further increased the responsibility placed on Rooney, who was asked to provide creativity, physicality, and penetration in an England attack that struggled to consistently create clear chances.

His tournament ended dramatically in the quarter-final against Portugal. Rooney was sent off in the 62nd minute following an incident involving Ricardo Carvalho, leaving England to play the remainder of the match with ten men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, England held Portugal scoreless through extra time before eventually losing on penalties. Rooney finished the tournament without a goal, a sharp contrast to the four goals he had scored at Euro 2004.

Despite the difficult ending, Rooney's importance to the team was unmistakable. England had rushed one of the world's most exciting young attackers back from a serious injury because of the unique qualities he offered: explosive movement, strength, creativity, aggression, and an ability to influence matches from multiple attacking positions.
